  • Expect to set aside 1 hour for appointment<\/li><\/ul>

    • Wear warm clothing for comfort<\/li>
    • Eliminate metal on or around head<\/li>
    • You will be asked to remove facial and ear piercings, necklaces, hearing aids, and dentures at the time of imaging<\/li>
    • You will have to lay flat on your back for 10 min of imaging. If you have problems with this, please call scheduling below<\/li>
    • If you are claustrophobic:<\/li>
    • You may bring anxiety meds with you to take here<\/li>
    • We will not provide them. They must be ordered by your Physician<\/li>
    • If you choose to take them, a driver will be required<\/li>

                                  Screening for metal (very important)<\/strong><\/p>

                                  MRI uses a strong magnet, so tell the imaging center if you have:<\/p>

                                  • Pacemaker or implanted defibrillator<\/li>
                                  • Cochlear (ear) implant<\/li>
                                  • Brain aneurysm clips<\/li>
                                  • Metal fragments, gunshot wounds (especially in eyes)<\/li>
                                  • Insulin pump, glucose monitor, or medication pump<\/li>
                                  • Neurostimulator or any implanted devices<\/li>
                                  • Any prior surgeries<\/li><\/ul>

                                    Most modern implants are MRI-conditional, but they must confirm first.<\/p>

                                    Eating & drinking<\/strong><\/p>

                                    • Usually no restrictions<\/strong> for standard MRI.<\/li>
                                    • For abdominal MRIs and some pelvis exams, fasting is often required.<\/li><\/ul>

                                      Follow the specific instructions from your imaging center.<\/p>

                                      Medications<\/strong><\/p>

                                      • Take regular medications unless told otherwise.<\/li>
                                      • If you have kidney problems, inform them (important if contrast is used).<\/li><\/ul>

                                        Clothing<\/strong><\/p>

                                        • Wear clothes without metal<\/strong> (no zippers, underwire bras, snaps).<\/li>
                                        • You may be asked to change into a gown or scrubs provided by the clinic.<\/li>
                                        • Remove:
                                          • Jewelry<\/li>
                                          • Watches<\/li>
                                          • Hairpins<\/li>
                                          • Hearing aids<\/li>
                                          • Dentures<\/li>
                                          • Credit cards (magnet can damage them)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
                                            \u00a0<\/div>

                                            If You\u2019re Claustrophobic<\/strong><\/p>

                                            • Tell your doctor beforehand, they may prescribe medicine to take.<\/li><\/ul>
                                              \u00a0<\/div>

                                              If Contrast Is Used<\/strong><\/p>

                                              • Contrast is given through an IV.<\/li>
                                              • It helps highlight blood vessels, tumors, inflammation, etc.<\/li>
                                              • Generally very safe.<\/li>
                                              • Tell them if you:
                                                • Have kidney disease<\/li>
                                                • Had prior reaction to contrast<\/li>
                                                • Are pregnant<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
                                                  \u00a0<\/div>

                                                  During the MRI<\/strong><\/p>

                                                  • You must lie very still.<\/li>
                                                  • The scan usually takes 20\u201360 minutes<\/strong>.<\/li>
                                                  • You\u2019ll hear loud knocking sounds (this is normal).<\/li>
                                                  • Hearing protection will be given.<\/li>
                                                  • You can communicate with the technologist at any time.<\/li><\/ul>
                                                    \u00a0<\/div>

                                                    After the MRI<\/strong><\/p>

                                                    • You can resume normal activities immediately (unless you have an arthrogram, it\u2019s recommended to take it easy for the day).<\/li>
                                                    • If sedated, you\u2019ll need someone to drive you home.<\/li><\/ul>
