Screening for metal (very important)

MRI uses a strong magnet, so tell the imaging center if you have:

  • Pacemaker or implanted defibrillator
  • Cochlear (ear) implant
  • Brain aneurysm clips
  • Metal fragments, gunshot wounds (especially in eyes)
  • Insulin pump, glucose monitor, or medication pump
  • Neurostimulator or any implanted devices
  • Any prior surgeries

Most modern implants are MRI-conditional, but they must confirm first.

Eating & drinking

  • Usually no restrictions for standard MRI.
  • For abdominal MRIs and some pelvis exams, fasting is often required.

Follow the specific instructions from your imaging center.

Medications

  • Take regular medications unless told otherwise.
  • If you have kidney problems, inform them (important if contrast is used).

Clothing

  • Wear clothes without metal (no zippers, underwire bras, snaps).
  • You may be asked to change into a gown or scrubs provided by the clinic.
  • Remove:
    • Jewelry
    • Watches
    • Hairpins
    • Hearing aids
    • Dentures
    • Credit cards (magnet can damage them)

If You’re Claustrophobic

  • Tell your doctor beforehand, they may prescribe medicine to take.

If Contrast Is Used

  • Contrast is given through an IV.
  • It helps highlight blood vessels, tumors, inflammation, etc.
  • Generally very safe.
  • Tell them if you:
    • Have kidney disease
    • Had prior reaction to contrast
    • Are pregnant

During the MRI

  • You must lie very still.
  • The scan usually takes 20–60 minutes.
  • You’ll hear loud knocking sounds (this is normal).
  • Hearing protection will be given.
  • You can communicate with the technologist at any time.

After the MRI

  • You can resume normal activities immediately (unless you have an arthrogram, it’s recommended to take it easy for the day).
  • If sedated, you’ll need someone to drive you home.
